Great Western Railway 'Staying on Track’ Competition Terms and Conditions
Terms and Conditions for skill-based Competitions (UK)
- The competition is open to all UK school pupils aged 5-11, whose school has been registered by their teacher/head teacher for the GWR Young Great Westerners schools programme.
- No purchase necessary. Entry to the competition is free.
- Only one entry per pupil. Each pupil must obtain the permission of a teacher, parent/guardian before entering the competition. Multiple entries made by the same person will not be accepted.
- Teachers of the entrants must read and accept the website Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy (available to view at https://www.younggreatwesterners.com/info#tscs) to ensure that their children are eligible.
- The entry must be original material created by the pupil.
- Entrants must be from a school in one of the following counties to be eligible:
- Berkshire
- Carmarthenshire
- Cornwall
- Devon
- Dorset
- East Sussex
- Gloucestershire
- Gwent
- Hampshire
- Hereford and Worcester
- Herefordshire
- London
- Oxfordshire
- Pembrokeshire
- Somerset
- South Glamorgan
- Surrey
- West Glamorgan
- Wiltshire
- Worcestershire
- Incomplete, illegal, misdirected or late entries will not be accepted. Proof of posting or sending will not be accepted as proof of receipt. Responsibility cannot be accepted for lost, damaged or delayed entries whether due to technical or connectivity problems or otherwise.
- Entrants must write/type their entry on the competition leaflet provided. Completed pupils’ entries must be submitted with an entry form for each individual entry. - A panel of experts will judge the entries using the following success criteria:
5-7 year olds:
- Includes an engaging drawing of their special place
- Helps the reader to imagine the setting with their description
- Includes facts on why it is an important place
- Includes facts on how the entrant will help to protect it by being sustainable
7-11 year olds:
- Includes an engaging drawing of their special place.
- Helps the reader to imagine the setting with their description
- Explains why it is special and important for the region, now and in the past
- Includes facts on how the entrant will help to protect it by being sustainable

- Any entries containing any third party intellectual property without prior informed consent from the rights holder, or abusive, inappropriate, offensive or obscene language or imagery will be disqualified. Examples of language/images considered to be inappropriate, offensive or obscene, include (but are not limited to): any message/image which contains (a) swearing; (b) comments or actions which appear to be discriminatory of any person, company or group of individuals, for example comments of a racist, sexist or homophobic nature; (c) sexual innuendo, sexual language or sexual acts, actions or gestures; (d) promoting any illegal unlawful activity such as drug use; (e) any message that appears to be an advertisement or solicitation to buy.
- The compteition closing date is 25/11/20
- There will be one winner chosen from each age category.
- All prizes will be awarded on the condition that the winning school agree to take part in publicity requests as appropriate. If this condition is not met by the winning school, the prize will be awarded to another entrant that does agree to this condition.
- The teacher of the winner will be notified by telephone or email before 14.12.20
- To accept the prize, the winning school must notify The National School Partnership via the email: ygw@nationalschoolspartnership.com within a week of being contacted.
- GWR/National Schools Partnership will get in contact with the winning pupil and winning school within 21 days of the prize being accepted by the parties involved.
- The Promoter shall own all the copyright and other intellectual property rights in the entries and any other materials (whether visual, oral or written) generated during the various stages of this competition, in perpetuity and on a worldwide basis for use at the Promoter’s sole discretion including, without limitation, use in advertising, other media, press releases, editorial and promotional activity, point of sale material, the Promoter’s websites, third party websites (including MySpace, Facebook and Youtube), newsletters and e-newsletters.
- Accordingly entrants assign to the Promoter any copyright and other intellectual property rights which exist in their participation in the GWR Young Great Westerners schools competition, irrevocably waive any moral rights that could vest in them (which shall include their name, city and age) under the Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988 or otherwise, and undertake to do all things necessary immediately on the Promoter’s request to effect or confirm any assignment in this paragraph.
- Entrants' submissions, future submissions and quotes generated during any stage of the competition may be modified by the Promoter to fit in context with the content of the relevant usage, whilst maintaining the original sentiment.
- The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- If a prize is declined or if the winner or winning school forfeit their prize/s under these terms or conditions, then the judges may at their absolute discretion select alternative winners.
- The prize is as stated, is not transferable and there are no alternative prizes or cash substitutes. The Promoter reserves the right to substitute the prize with one of like value in the event that the selected prize is unavailable for any reason whatsoever.
- Neither the Promoter nor agencies involved in this promotion may be liable to the winners, whether arising from tort including negligence, breach of contract or otherwise or for any loss or damage whatsoever caused by matters relating participation in this competition, or in relation to the prizes to the extent permissible by law.
- All personal details and/or information given in the entry form or otherwise must be truthful, accurate and in no way misleading.
- The Promoter reserves the right in his/her reasonable discretion:
- To disqualify any competitor whose conduct is contrary to the spirit of the rules or the intention of the promotion and to declare as void any or all of their claims or entries based on such conduct.
- To disqualify entrants if they have supplied untruthful, inaccurate or misleading personal details and/or information, or if it materialises that the entrant has been involved in any behaviour which the Promoter reasonably believes would bring it into disrepute.
- To disqualify any competitor who submits an entry that is not their own original material.
- To declare as void any claims or entries resulting from any printing, production and/or distribution errors (including but not limited to any error(s) on this website, and/or other printed materials) or where there has been error(s) in any aspect of the preparation for or conduct of the promotion materially affecting the result of the promotion or the number of claimants or the value of claims.
- To add to or to waive any rules on reasonable notice.
- And/or to cancel the promotion or any part of it at any stage in the event of circumstances beyond reasonable control.
28. By entering this competition, teachers will be deemed to be bound by and have accepted these terms and conditions. The Promoter shall disqualify any entries that have failed to abide by the terms and conditions and/or are in breach of the terms and conditions.
29. English law applies and the English courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any proceedings in connection with this promotion.
